Rehoming Your Pet in East Tennessee: Support, Resources, and Next Steps
Making the decision to rehome a pet is never easy. It often comes after sleepless nights, hard conversations, and circumstances that feel out of your control. At Sevier County Animal Shelter, we understand that surrendering a beloved pet can be emotional, stressful, and heartbreaking. Our goal is always to support you, provide real-life solutions, and help keep pets with their families whenever possible.
If you’re facing the possibility of rehoming your pet in East Tennessee, know that you’re not alone, and you do have options.
Start With Support: Keeping Pets in Homes When Possible
Before rehoming becomes the only option, we encourage pet owners to explore available resources that may help stabilize the situation. Many challenges, such as financial strain, temporary housing issues, or behavioral concerns, can be resolved with the right support.
One important resource available through Sevier County Animal Shelter is our Pet Food Pantry. If you are struggling to afford food for your pet, this program is here to help. No one should have to surrender a pet solely due to temporary financial hardship, and access to pet food can often provide much-needed relief during difficult times.
If your pet is experiencing behavioral challenges, there are also free and low-cost educational resources available to help address common issues such as anxiety, reactivity, or adjustment problems.
Rehoming on Your Own: Responsible Options
When keeping your pet is not possible, rehoming them directly can be a positive alternative. This allows you to remain involved in the process and help ensure your pet finds a safe, loving home.
Helpful rehoming options include:
Posting in trusted local Facebook groups focused on pet rehoming
Sharing flyers at community spaces like churches, coffee shops, parks, or community centers
Using reputable online rehoming platforms that allow you to screen potential adopters
When rehoming independently, take time to:
Be honest about your pet’s personality, needs, and history
Ask questions of potential adopters
Request a veterinary reference when possible
Share medical records and routines to set everyone up for success
Thoughtful rehoming protects your pet and helps prevent future displacement.
When Surrender Is the Only Option
If all other options have been explored and surrendering your pet is unavoidable, Sevier County Animal Shelter is here to help in a structured, compassionate way.
Owner surrenders are accepted by appointment only and should be considered a last resort. This allows our team to ensure we have the space, resources, and staff available to provide proper care for every animal.
Surrender fees are:
$30 for one pet
$50 for two or more pets
These fees help offset the cost of medical care, food, and daily support for animals entering the shelter.
Please call the shelter directly to discuss your situation and schedule an appointment.
You’re Doing the Best You Can
Rehoming your pet does not mean you failed. It means you care deeply about their future and are seeking the safest, most responsible outcome. Whether you need temporary assistance, behavioral guidance, or help navigating next steps, Sevier County Animal Shelter is committed to supporting both pets and the people who love them.
