Adoption Process

At Sevier County Animal Shelter, located in Sevier County, TN, our adoption process is centered around one simple goal: finding the right pet for the right home.

We believe every animal is a unique individual, and successful adoptions are based on personality compatibility, not a strict checklist of rules. Our dedicated team is here to help you find a pet that truly fits your lifestyle, home, and expectations.

The process begins with a short questionnaire to help us understand what you’re looking for in a furever pet. From there, you’ll work with an adoption counselor and will have the opportunity to meet different animals until you find the one that feels like the purfect match.

Once you fall in love, the final steps include completing some paperwork and paying the small adoption fee, which helps offset a portion of the animal’s medical care.

Please note: Sevier County Animal Shelter reserves the right to deny any adoption if we believe the home may not be a safe or appropriate fit for the animal.

  • Yes. We encourage meet-and-greets whenever possible. Bringing your current dog to meet a potential new companion can help ensure compatibility and a smoother transition at home.

  • Yes. We offer trial adoption periods of 1–2 weeks for qualified adopters. This allows you to see how a dog adjusts to your home, routine, and family before making a final commitment.

  • Our team works closely with each dog to observe behavior, energy level, and temperament while in our care. We share all known history and observations to help match dogs with the right home.

  • If we have known history regarding how a dog interacts with other dogs, we will share it. However, every dog is an individual, and meet-and-greets with your personal dog are the best way to assess compatibility.

  • If a dog has known cat-friendly history, we will share that information. For safety reasons and fairness to our shelter cats, we are unable to conduct cat-to-dog testing inside the shelter. Trial adoptions can be a helpful option when introducing dogs to cats at home.

  • Yes. We do not have blanket restrictions on families with children.

We encourage the entire family to meet the animal prior to adoption.

In some cases, specific dogs may not be recommended for homes with young children due to behavior history. When this applies, it will be clearly noted.

  • We understand that not every match works out. If a dog isn’t the right fit, we’ll ask you to return them to the shelter and complete a brief personality profile. This helps us learn more about the dog and make a better match moving forward.

  • Yes. Dogs are fully vetted and spayed or neutered before they are eligible to go home.

  • There is a 90 day waiting period to adopt additional animals unless it’s kittens or bonded pairs.
