If You’ve Lost a Pet

We know how stressful it is to lose a pet. Acting quickly and sharing information widely can greatly improve the chances of a reunion.

Start Here

  • Search the area of the last known location of the pet

  • Check with the microchip company for any alerts

    • Remember to update your contact information regularly

  • Post in Lost & Found pet groups, neighborhood groups, and hang up flyers with a photo and description of the animal

  • Check in with surrounding animal shelters and ask about their lost and found pets in their care.

Sevier County Animal Shelter requires in-person reporting to ensure accurate records and help pets get home faster. Please bring a recent photo of the animal and a description.

What else can you do?

  1. Microchip your pets

Sevier County Animal Shelter offers microchipping for $20 and will register the ID. No appointment needed.

  2. Search locally and often
Walk or drive your neighborhood daily, especially early morning and evening. Talk to your mail carrier, neighbors, lawn care teams, HOA, etc.

  3. Place their bedding on the porch

Animals have a stronger sense of smell than sight. Placing items they are familiar with outside will, hopefully, help them smell their way home.

  4. Check the shelter frequently
Lost pets can arrive at different times. Visit the shelter every few days if possible.

To offset the costs of holding lost animals, there is a reclaim fee of $30 the first day, then $10 per additional day. We also offer $10 microchips with reclaim and Rabies vaccination for $5.

  5. Use online tools

  6. Use social media

    • Post in local Facebook groups (Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Sevier County community pages)

    • Ask friends and neighbors to share

  7. Create and post flyers
Place flyers near where your pet was last seen, intersections, parks, and local businesses.

  8. Don’t give up
Many pets are reunited days or even weeks after going missing.

If You Found a Pet

If you’ve found a stray animal, thank you for helping keep them safe.

What to Do First

  • Ensure the animal is safe and secure

  • Check for identification, such as a collar or tag

  • If possible, scan for a microchip at a veterinarian or animal shelter

Next Steps

  • Contact Sevier County Animal Shelter to report the found pet. You’ll need to schedule a time with our intake department so we can prepare for your arrival. SACCintake@gmail.com

    • If the animal is injured or sick, please bring them straight to the shelter.

  • Share clear photos and details about where the pet was found

  • If you are interested in fostering or adopting the animal, please let our team know

Please do not rehome a found pet on your own. Animals may have families actively searching for them.

Found Kittens or Momma Cat?

If you find kittens or a Mom, it’s important to leave them be and observe. If the kittens seem healthy, clean, and quiet, most likely Mom is around.

To confirm whether the kittens and Mom are together, circle the kittens with flour. If there are paws in the flour, we can assume Mom is with them.

If Mom is with the kittens, you can rent a trap from Sevier County Animal Shelter for two weeks. We ask for a $25 deposit that you’ll get back once you return the trap.

Once the kittens and Mom are trapped, you can schedule a time to bring them to our intake department (SACCintake@gmail.com). Our team will give them an exam and get them fixed before you return them to the area where they were trapped.
