Adoption Process

At Sevier County Animal Shelter, located in Sevier County, TN, our adoption process is centered around one simple goal: finding the right pet for the right home.

We believe every animal is a unique individual, and successful adoptions are based on personality compatibility, not a strict checklist of rules. Our dedicated team is here to help you find a pet that truly fits your lifestyle, home, and expectations.

The process begins with a short questionnaire to help us understand what you’re looking for in a furever pet. From there, you’ll work with an adoption counselor and will have the opportunity to meet different animals until you find the one that feels like the purfect match. Trail adoptions available.

Once you fall in love, the final steps include completing some paperwork and paying the small adoption fee, which helps offset a portion of the animal’s medical care. Questions? Read our FAQs here.

Please note: Sevier County Animal Shelter reserves the right to deny any adoption if we believe the home may not be a safe or appropriate fit for the animal.

  • Every household is different. Things like schedules, kids, other pets, and daily routines all matter. To help ensure a good fit, we focus on personality compatibility rather than strict rules and offer guidance throughout the adoption process.

  • Yes! We offer a trial adoption period of 1–2 weeks for qualified adopters. This allows families to spend time with a pet in their home to ensure it’s a good fit before making a final decision.

All pets are fully vetted and spayed or neutered before going home.

  • No worries! That’s exactly what the trial period is for. If it’s not the right match, we’ll ask you to schedule a time to bring the pet back to the shelter and complete a brief personality profile. This helps us learn more about the pet and make a better match next time. You’re welcome to try again when you’re ready.

  • We ask all potential adopters to complete a short adoption questionnaire before meeting an adoptable pet. Our team uses your answers to help guide you toward a pet that fits your home and lifestyle.

  • Absolutely. We do not have blanket restrictions on families with children.

We encourage the entire family to come and meet their potential furbaby.

In some cases, specific cats or dogs may not be suited for homes with young children due to behavior history. When this applies, it will be clearly noted on the pet’s adoption card or kennel.

  • Absolutely not. We are not here to judge anyone. Your appearance, background, how you speak, or your family structure have no impact on your ability to adopt. Our goal is simple: to match animals who need love with people ready to provide it.

  • That’s okay. New animals arrive regularly, and sometimes the right match takes time. Our team is happy to help you continue your search or explore fostering while you wait.

  • There is a 90-day waiting period to adopt additional animals unless they are kittens or bonded pairs.
