Pet Fosters for Sevier County Animal Shelter: Opening Your Home, Saving Lives
Fostering an animal is one of the most powerful ways to make an immediate impact on the lives of pets in need. At Sevier County Animal Shelter, foster homes are an essential part of our mission to care for animals and help them find permanent, loving homes.
Our pet fosters for Sevier County Animal Shelter provide temporary care, comfort, and stability for animals who need a little extra time or support before adoption. By opening your heart and home, you help save lives, create space in the shelter, and give animals the chance to thrive.
Why Foster Care Matters
Foster families play a critical role in animal welfare. When animals move into foster homes, they receive individualized attention, a calm environment, and the opportunity to recover, grow, or socialize outside the shelter setting. At the same time, fostering frees up space within the shelter so we can help even more animals in our community.
Fostering isn’t about perfection. It’s about compassion, patience, and providing a safe place for an animal during a transitional time.
Animals Who Need Foster Homes
Many different animals benefit from foster care, including:
Orphaned puppies or kittens who require bottle-feeding
Unweaned puppies or kittens staying with their mother
Puppies or kittens who are eating on their own but are not yet old enough for spay or neuter
Pets recovering from injury, illness, or needing help with weight gain or loss
Animals awaiting rescue placement or transport
Pets who need extra time in a home environment for socialization and confidence-building
Each foster situation is unique, and our team works closely with foster families to ensure a good match between the animal’s needs and the foster’s availability.
How the Foster Program Works
Becoming a foster is a supportive, guided experience. Here’s what to expect:
Step 1: Medical Evaluation
All animals entering foster care are examined by our shelter team. They receive appropriate tests, vaccinations, deworming, and flea treatments. Each animal’s individual needs are carefully evaluated.
Step 2: Foster Placement Notification
Foster families are notified about animals in need through our foster Facebook group and direct communication from shelter staff.
Step 3: Foster Pickup
Once matched, foster families pick up their foster animal along with necessary supplies provided by the shelter.
Step 4: Ongoing Care & Checkups
Foster families bring their foster animal back to the shelter as needed for veterinary exams, vaccinations, or follow-up care.
Step 5: Adoption Readiness
When the animal is ready for adoption, they are placed on the adoption floor at Sevier County Animal Shelter until a forever home is found.
Throughout the process, our team remains available to answer questions and provide guidance.
Adoption Ambassadors: Going One Step Further
Some foster families choose to become Adoption Ambassadors, helping actively promote their foster pet for adoption.
Adoption Ambassadors share their foster pet’s story through word of mouth, social media, emails to friends and family, or by bringing their foster pet to pet-friendly locations around town. This extra visibility often helps animals find homes faster and allows potential adopters to see pets in a relaxed, real-life setting.
